Swim Meet 101

Franklins Knolls competes in the Montgomery County Swim League (MCSL). For the 2026 season the Gators compete in Division C of the MCSL. There are two classes of meets during the season:

  • A Meets
A Meets are the premier meets of the MCSL. Points scored during A Meets count toward Division standing and determine the Division in which the team will compete in the next season. Swimmer participation in A Meets is by invitation of the coaches and, usually, is based on the best times for each event.
    • Here is how the line-up for A meets is determined:
Each week, the coaching staff evaluates the progress of all the team's swimmers to determine who should swim in the upcoming A-Meet. The coaches decide who will swim each event based on:
      1) The availability of our swimmers
      2) Each swimmer’s best times
      3) League rules (i.e. 6 swimmers are entered in Freestyle, and 3 in every other stroke, swim ups, max event entry numbers, etc.)
      4) Prospective scoring match-ups likely to produce the highest point total for the team
The results of these decisions are presented collectively in the weekly A-Meet line-up, which is always emailed out late Wednesday night.

Due to all of these variables, it is important that swimmers do not make assumptions about what they may or may not be swimming in any given A-Meet. The decision ultimately rests with the coaching staff and it is always a very dynamic situation.

A swimmer who competes in an A Meet event is ineligible to swim the same event in the following B Meet.
  • B Meets
B Meets are open to all swimmers with the exception, noted above, of swimmers who competed in the same event in the previous A Meet. e.g. A swimmer who competes in only the 50m Freestyle at an A Meet may not compete in the 50m Freestyle at the following B Meet. The same swimmer may, however, compete in any other event at the following B Meet. Please note that for younger swimmers, coaches may restrict entry to some events if they feel the swimmer cannot complete the event legally and is still learning the stroke(s).

Times for B Meets count toward eligibility in A Meets.
